South Korean action drama starring some hot korean chicks. Also some japanese people are involved. Open City is about rivaling pickpocketing gangs, trying to gain power over various districts and eliminating resistance. In all this mess we have this police officer with a high moral doing his best to stop these thieves. However, there are some family issues which seems to play a bigger part in his relations and behaviour than might be anticipated.

There are some really badass fighting scenes, although i miss the gore. There isn’t like a single drop of blood being shed throughout the whole experience. But that’s okay. The actual story and the characters are really well made – and the actors make a great performance. It doesn’t get too silly as asian movies often does (being “over-emotional” over the tinyest things). I actually felt something when viewing how the destiny of each character turned out.

Way better than I expected. Give it a shot.

This movie scared the fucking living hell out of me. I have never been so scared since watching The Blair Witch Project. I don’t know what it is about these kind of low budget horror movies creeping me out. It may be that they are filmed by “ordinary” people with “ordinary” cameras making them seem so much more real than any Exorcist or whatever Hollywood movie flick. Or it may be that they take place in present time, in environments where you usually find yourself familiar and safe. I don’t know. But it is creepy as hell.

The story: Katie and her boyfriend Micah have been living together for three years and out of the blue, they are haunted by an entity while they are sleeping. Katie discloses to Micah that she has been haunted since she was eight years old. The skeptical Micah buys a camera to videotape the paranormal activity in their home during the night. Katie calls Fredrichs, a psychic, to help them, but he explains that he is specialist in ghosts. However he feels the presence of a fiend and advises the couple to call a friend of his. Things doesn’t turn out quite so smoothly however, as the mysterious presence seems to get more active, stronger and violent night by night.

Note that the movie has two endings. I’ve seen both of them. The alternative cut is definitely the better one of them, giving the movie a nice, morbid, dark ending. Well, the original ending isn’t really happy either but a bit more boring.

The horror is often very subtle. Like dull noises gaining slowly in amplitude. Soft, almost seemless motions around the sleeping couple that you barely notice – but you do notice that something is not right. It is when it comes to the more violent parts with doors slamming, loud noises, and a hell of a lot of screaming I feel that the movie loses some of its horrific atmosphere. But that is often compensated by some really awkward, creepy scenes afterwards. Just the plain weirdness of especially Katie when she’s being traumatized (and probably possessed) is really scary.

People have been complaining that it is boring because “nothing ever happens”. Well, dipshits – that’s the reason why it is scary. Nothing drastic like huge fucking demons sprouting fire and stabbing hearts with pitchforks are found here. No special effects. No epic intro music, no shootouts, no occult sect looking for world domination. Just simple, plain efficient horror with normal people who you can relate to. So shut the hell up you dipshits and go watch Friday the 13th or something. You filthy whining fucks.

Having heard all his stories from his own trip, I enjoyed reading Guy Delisle’s description of the same nation. I recognized much of the stuff Magnus has talked about during our coffee breaks at work.

Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea is an entertaining book (actually a comic book, but depicting real stuff) that shows we should be really fucking grateful for not living in a totalitarian communistic state.

It’s funny in one way, since Delisle manages to describe his eperiences in a dark, comical kind of way. But at the same time it’s really disturbing. All my prejudices about North Korea seems to be closer to the truth than I had hoped.

Anyways, it took about 2 hours or something to read these almost 200 pages, 2 hours I’m glad that I invested. I’m not sure if it motives its price tag being just a bit above 100 SEK, but if you find it cheap somewhere (or has the possibility to lend it from one of your friends) – then don’t hesitate. Just do it.

More stories should be told in this manner. I found some excerpts I’ve uploaded for your convenience, so you can get a feeling for how the book is. Just see below, and decide for yourself.

And Planet Terror is a fucking grindhouse masterpiece. Even better than Death Proof I’d say. In short, this is a zombie massacre, one-liner heavy, badassness filled ultracool movie. After an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it’s up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release.

Planet Terror is directed by Robert Rodriguez, one of my favourite directors with a record containing amon others Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn, Four Rooms, Desperado and El mariachi.

It’s all about the details when you’re viewing this movie. It starts out really good by some infomercial about a movie called “The Machete” (starring that mexican badass motherfucker Danny Trejo. Actually a real movie I later found out. What more, IMDB tells that Jessica Alba is starring in the movie too. Something to keep an eye out for, in other words). Then the real movie starts. Really well too. With a (very long) striptease scene, with a girl named Cherry (Rose McGowan) with a superbly nice ass. Not as nice as Carina’s. But almost. There’s a shitload of foxy ladies all over the place in Planet Terror. I liked it.

Oh yeah, I was supposed to rant about the details. Tarantino has a cameo in the movie too. I love the visual theme of the movie; keeping it dirty and “scratched”. In one hot sex scene in the middle of the movie, they even “destroy” the movie reel, inserting a notice of apology from the cinema directors. Really neat way to switch scene! Then we have this dude collecting cojones (literally), Bruce Willis being a badass sergeant, Stacy Ferguson as another hot piece of ass ‘n tits and a lot of other familiar faces. I love the characters. They’re just so… awesome!

Then there’s the music. Planet Terror has the best intro music ever:

(There is this really awesome remix of that one too, that you’ll have to check out) :

Stuff happens all the time. I couldn’t take away my eyes from the screen, being afraid to miss something really awesome. With a total body count of 281, you’re in for some freakin’ heavy slaughtering action. (Note however that it is done with great finesse. It doesn’t feel sloppy).

Expected to be a pile of crap (but with good gore). Turned out to be quite awesome. Skinwalkers depicts two packs of werewolves, divided by principles. One pack thinks their ability is a curse and wants to cure themselves. The other pack sees it as a gift (or just an addiction like a drug) and wants to stay werewolves.

They are both singaled by the moon of the coming of an prophecy. A small boy named Timothy approaches his 13th birthday, unaware this marks the time of his transformation. Timothy has been raised by his mother Rachel, his grandmother, his Uncle Jonas, his cousin Katherine and her boyfriend, Adam. Rachel and her son Timothy have been unaware that the rest of the family are good werewolves that have guarded Timothy since birth. They know that Timothy is a half blood, and will control the destiny of the family. But they also know that Timothy’s power will put him in danger, for there are other werewolves that revel and embrace their blood-lust that are prepared to kill to preserve their way of life. These werewolves, led by Varek, Zo and Sonya, are hell bent on finding Timothy…their kin.

Yeah, I stole most of that from IMDB. That was because I didn’t really concentrate on the story when I watched Skinwalkers. I concentrated on all the awesome firepower (like granny werewolf wielding a six-shooter, blasting several people back to hell), the badass transformations, the sharp teeth, the blood, the car chases and everything else that is awesome. There’s even this epic final fight scene where like every werewolf just goes haywire and fuck eachother up.

Yes, Skinwalkers is definitely worth seeing. Especially when you’re in that friday afternoon after-work-tired and just want to see something that could have been written by Stephen King. But with a bit more action. You know what I mean. I hope.

Anyways, go grab a copy of this sucker and keep it in your personal collection.

Based on a Stephen King novel, this is one of the better I’ve seen. I haven’t read the book, so it’s gonna be interesting to see if the book (novel) actually gives me more than this film.

Plot: A story about Las Vegas middle school science teacher (Robinson) whose beloved wife (Elizabeth) witnesses an execution in the desert and is then targeted for death by the mobster who committed it, notorious Vegas crime lord Jimmy Dolan (played by Christian Slater). Dolan’s vast wealth stems from his human trafficking operations. Dolan succeeds in having Elizabeth killed before she can testify against him. Without a witness to the murders, Dolan goes free, and Robinson must avenge Elizabeth’s death on his own.

Yeah, I know it sounds mundane but trust me – it isn’t. The dialogue is perfect; the way Dolan speaks (in a kind of poetical way) in combination with the half-surrealistic shots that are combined into the movie gives Dolan’s Cadillac a certain atmosphere that I adore.

Besides, the way Robinson plots his avenge is just so god damn inventive – haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else.

Big up for Dolan’s Cadillac. With such a simple story, it’s one of the better films of 2009.

This thing with time traveling has been used in the Twilight Zone show a bit too much I think. I’m getting a bit tired of it, so this episode annoyed me more than it normally would, considering the history of the show.

Not really the season (when I’m writing this) for such an episode, but it was quite ok anyways. The moral of the story may however been a bit too obvious…

“When our world ended, their mission began”.

After an apocalyptic war between human and machines, the world is completely destroyed and without human life. The burlap doll 9 awakes without voice and finds a weird object in the middle of the debris that he brings with him. While walking through the ruins, 9 is attacked by a machine called Beast but he is saved by another doll called 2 that fixes his voice. 2 brings 9 to meet his hidden community, leaded by the chickenshit 1. When 2 is captured by a machine, the newcomer 9 convinces the other dolls to go with him to rescue 2. However, 9 places the device that he found in a slot and activates a lethal machine called Brain. The burlap dolls are chased by Brain and despite the advices of 1 that they should hide, 9 organizes an attack to destroy Brain.

9 is one of the better animated movies I’ve seen in a while. I really love the post-apocalyptic, junkyard-ish style that is used throughout the movie. The characters are a bit shallow and the dialogue is often lacking credibility. But even considering these two (usually major) flaws, I still enjoyed this 1 hour and 15 minutes show.

Give it a shot. The scenery and playfulness in animations make up for the flaws in character depth.

In New York, the drug-addicted Syd is consumed by drink and drugs – missing his girlfriend London (what the hell is that for kind of name for a girl, really…), who broke up with him six months ago after a two-year relationship. When Syd finds that London’s friends throw a going away party for her, he decides to go to the party without an invitation. But first he meets the banker and drug-dealer, Bateman (not the psychopath. Statham plays this role), in a bar to buy coke, and he invites his new acquaintance to go to the party with him. While locked in the bathroom with Bateman snorting coke and drinking booze, Syd recalls moments of his relationship with London, inclusive that he had never said “I love you” to his girlfriend despite her countless requests. Bateman also “open his heart” under the influence of cocaine and tells his impotence problem to Syd; in the end he convinces Syd to talk to London.

So, a whirl of flashbacks and a bit Jessica Biel (playing London) half-nudeness, with a Statham with hair on his head for once and not whupping ass like a manial (well, some in the end but that isn’t much) and a lot of drugs you’re in for a drama. A drama. Yes, Magnus, I’m talking to you. You may actually appreciate this movie (even though Hugh Grant isn’t appearing anywhere). Oh yeah, and Dane Cook has a minor role too. That’s kinda funny.

London was kind of boring I’d say if it weren’t for the drugs and how nicely they did the cutting from present time to past time and back again. The only reason I wanted to see this was because Statham was starring in it. And I must say I was a bit disappointed. But for you drama-loving, coke-snorting nuts out there you might find something of value. I don’t know.

Take David Lynch, mix in some (more) LSD, dip in some randomness and the artistic talent of a 7-year old, add some cursing and there you go. 12 Oz. Mouse.

Fucking brilliant I’d say! The main character is Fitz (Mouse Fitzgerald) who is a green, beer-swilling, chaotic neutral mouse. He lives in a violent, nihilistic town made out of cardboard. Yep, cardboard.

Our mouse takes on a series of oddjobs for Shark (literally a shark). What more we have a (two) giant eyeball(s), a one-handed corndog farmer, a wealthy square and his trusted side-kick Skillet – a chinchilla.

It is totally crazy and everything is like a big W T F – but that is the good thing about it. Here, take a look at this clip and decide for yourself if this is mindfuck enough for you.

Another badass movie I’ve borrowed from Mark at work. Thank you very much!

A teenage girl named Aki is transferred to a new high school just as a virus starts spreading among the students. Luckily, Aki has convinced her friend Sayaka to join the swim team, since a chemical in the swimming pool effectively neutralizes the virus. Unfortunately however, the other students have received their own inoculation—one that turns them into mindless, flesh-eating zombies. Now Aki must draw on her secret past as a trained assassin to fend them off and protect her swim team friends.

Mark warned me that this wasn’t as good as the others I’ve borrowed from him. But I must disagree. It really kicked some serious ass!

Let me just point out a few good things:

Badass rock’n'roll music at various scenes

Tight japanese school girls in school uniforms. And swimsuites.

Tits. Although they’re not big since they are japanese – they are still tits.

Lots of upskirt and lesbian fetischism.

Several complete sex scenes too. Almost thought I’d got my hands on a porno tape for a while there. It sure seemed like that.

And then some bad things:

Chlorine as the antidote for the zombie virus? Come oooon…

Zombie teacher speaking Engrish => NOT good. Should kept her mouth shut instead or stuck to her native japanese language. (Besides, japanese is a way more badass language anyways).

I’ve learned that a flute can sound like a music organ. What the hell did they really think?

But the seriously most fucked up thing is the girl who’s shooting laser beams with her pussy (!). Yep, you heard me. Laser beams. With her pussy. That’s wicked. Look at the picture below and you’ll believe me.

Thompson himself. This book does not only contain the original Fear and Loathing story, but also Strange Rumblings in Aztlan and The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved.

What I like with Thompson’s Gonzo journalism (not only his escapades with all kind of drugs, which is really entertaining to read) is his use of the english language. It’s straight-forward, it’s full of cursing and twisted and put to print in a most awesome way. You never get tired of reading. Not just because of all the stories are just amazingly interesting, but as I said – the inventive way of using the language is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

I enjoyed savoring each and every page, every sentence, every word. This is one of those books you wish wouldn’t end. Not a single boring chapter or passage (at 304 pages long [short] it isn’t at all enough) gets boring or making you wish you could fast-forward-read (as in the case of many other books I’ve read).

Fucking brilliant journalism. You did well, Mr. Thompson. Really fucking well.

Me and Carina had a movie night the other day, but we had hard time deciding what to see. I suggested Attack Girl’s Swim Team versus The Undead that I’ve borrowed from Mark at work – but she just looked at me in a strange way. Didn’t really understand why.

So the choice fell upon either The Spirit, V for Vendetta or the Perfume. I chose The Spirit (already seen V and The Perfume looked pretty gay). However, she’s a woman of strong will and she totally dissed my suggestion of The Spirit – thus, we settled for The Perfume since I’ve already seen V for Vendetta. Like three times.

Anyways. I was prejudiced. I didn’t understand how you could make a whole fucking movie about a perfume (!) That’s ridiculous. So anyway, we’re watching this dude getting born in Paris with an extraordinary sense of smell. He can smell like everything and deduce what the smells consist of. He meets this girl that smells wonderful, but accidentially kills her in his hunt for her smell. When she dies her smell fades away. So he devotes his life to gaining knowledge of how to preserve scents.

Carina is the girl that dislikes unrealistic movies. Considering that in the end of this movie there’s a giant naked orgy with 750 people and our main dude escapes the executioner just because he’s got a perfume on his skin – well, that’s something I would definitely call unrealistic. However, it seems like her notion of ‘unrealistic’ is a bit biased.

Anyways, I wouldn’t say that The Perfume is a total waste of time. I was prejudiced, and I was right in my preconceptions. It was gay and really a movie for women. Furthermore, I really dislike that they didn’t speak the language of the country they were supposed to be in (France). I do however understand the decision to make all dialogue in english since french is like the most obnoxious, gay language ever in human history.

But, for being a kind of tacky story the performance was still good. This is perfect for you to put on when you’re bringing home a woman for a movie night. Cause your goal should be to get her in bed – not watch a good movie together. Then this is it.

He does this with his perfume on a handkerchief and then suddenly everybody just goes crazy and fuck eachothers brains out.

For several years this movie has been on my gotta-see-sometime-list. I finally did see it. What I didn’t know was that there’s a Broadway musical from 1979 with the same name. Thus, I was in for a lot of singing. Like in The Nightmare Before Christmas – but worse. Cause there’s actually just one thing I dislike about this Tim Burton movie – and that is all the fucking singing.

If the whole thing would’ve been made like a regular movie instead without the actors ranting around singing, I would endorse it fully. Anyways. Sweeney Todd. The plot:

Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), a skilled barber, is falsely charged and sentenced to a life of hard labor in Australia by the corrupt Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who lusts after Barker’s wife Lucy (Laura Michelle Kelly). Now under the assumed name “Sweeney Todd”, Barker returns to London with sailor Anthony Hope (Jamie Campbell Bower). At his old Fleet Street lodgings above Mrs. Nellie Lovett’s (Helena Bonham Carter) pie shop, he discovers that Lucy, having been raped by Turpin, has poisoned herself, and his teenage daughter Johanna (Jayne Wisener) is now Turpin’s ward, and like her mother before her, is the object of his unwanted affections. Todd vows revenge, reopening his barber shop in the upstairs flat. And boy does the blood flow.

As I’ve said in previous reviews I’m really fascinated by that typical Burton gothic esthetics – and you get plenty of that in this movie too (as you may already tell from the poster).

Even though all the singing and everything is annoying in the start, you get used to it and don’t mind it as much as the movie proceeds. Some people would say that the musical part is the charm of the whole thing. Those people don’t know what the hell they are talking about. Anyways, good story of revenge and how it isn’t always sweet. Johnny Depp and Sascha Baron Cohen (yes, he’s actually playing a major part in the first half of the movie) perform excellent as always.

If you feel that you can take a little (well, maybe not so little) singing for seeing a lot of people get their throats slit – then you’re in for a really good movie.

We were supposed to go see a movie. Since their taste in movies is so disparate, Sherlock Holmes seemed like a good compromise between brutal badass action (dad) and a bit more sophisticated crime story (mom). And, since it was Guy Ritchie who directed this one, the choice of Sherlock Holmes for the movie of the evening wasn’t hard.

Plot: After finally catching serial killer and occult “sorcerer” Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson can close yet another successful case. But when Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must take up the hunt once again. Contending with his partner’s new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the dauntless detective must unravel the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic – and the deadly embrace of temptress Irene Adler.

I really liked the it. This is how Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be, if I am to appreciate him. Robert Downey Jr. does an excellent part as the mastermind himself, and Jude Law is doing great as his partner Watson. Furthermore, the main villain (lord Blackwood, played by Mark Strong which you may remember as Archy from Rocknrolla) really fits in the role as the antagonist. It’s brutal. It’s clever. It’s fast. It’s filled with smart dialogue as well as monologue. It has its twists and turns, although not as mindfucking as for example The Sixth Sense. And, there’s the badass slow-motion action scenes where Holmes’ initial combat analysis is as thrilling as seeing it being performed. You will know what I mean when you see it.

Sherlock Holmes was – in my world previous to watching this movie – a smart, clever but somewhat boring character. Now I’ve seriously reconsidered my perception of him.

Thank you Ritchie for this one. Kudoz!

A traveler seeking refuge from a storm comes upon a bizarre hermitage of monks, who have imprisoned a man who begs for his help. When he confronts the head monk, he is told that the man is the devil, and the traveler must decide who to believe.

Funny thing is, that Charles Beaumont (writer) had originally envisioned that the monks would keep the Devil imprisoned by putting a cross in front of his cell door. Fearful of a backlash in the religious community, the producers substituted the “staff of truth,” over Beaumont’s objections. Fucking pussies.

I can just say that it is quite annoying to watch stupid characters on screen. Motherfuckers making decisions that are anything but rational makes me sick. This is the case in this episode.

Not considering my allergy against stupidity, this is a really cool episode.
